That’s the day you start to the top…

OJ Simpson said, “The day you take complete responsibility for yourself, the day you stop making any excuses, that’s the day you start to the top”.

I have seen most of the youth giving such statements:

  • I come from a poor family that’s why I couldn’t make progress.
  • There was no educated person in my family who could guide me.
  • My friends were very bad and they ruined my career.
  • I could not have good teachers.
  • I was forced to marry in my early age that’s why I could not focus on my career.
  • I had lot of responsibilities on my shoulders that’s why … and so on.

If you want to make real progress, stop using such excuses and take charge of your life. Remember, whatever you are today, you are because of your own self. And what you will be in future, you will be that because of your own self.

In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant.

During my second month of nursing school, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?” Surely, this was some kind of joke.

I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.

Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. “Absolutely,” said the professor. “In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say ‘hello’.” “I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

Can you admit your own flaws? A key to selling ‘YOU’

In the mid-1980’s researchers at Cleveland State University made a startling discovery.

They conducted an experiment by creating two fictitious job candidates David and John. The candidates had identical resumes and letters of reference. The only difference was that John’s letter included the sentence “Sometimes, John can be difficult to get along with”. They showed the resumes to a number of personnel directors. Which candidate did the personnel directors overwhelmingly prefer? Difficult to get along with, John.

The researchers concluded the criticism of John made praise of John more believable. Admitting John’s wart actually helped sell John. Admitting flaws gives you more credibility. A key to selling.

When your work and passion meet, you make miracles

Albert Camus said, ‘Without work all life goes rotten. But when work is soulless, life stifles and dies’. The secret of a successful career lies in the finding a work in which you never tire, which you love to do. You love your job so much that when you go to bed, you wait for the morning to rise so that you could start of work. When your work and passion meet, you make miracles in your career.

You cannot remake new start but a brand new ending of your own choice

Carl Bard said ‘Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending’. This is that great oppurtunity which has been bestowed upon every human being with any discrimination of cast, colour, creed or sex. This is a world of never ending oppurtunities, if you miss one, you still have the chance to get another. Never loose hope, never be disappointed. Always remember that God loves you. If you have lost some oppurtunity, it means nature has some better plans for you. But you must do one thing, ‘Keep improving your personality, skills and knowledge’.

A short story with a moral lesson for professionals …

An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, “Can I also sit like you and do nothing?”

The eagle answered, “Sure , why not.”

So the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested.
All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

The true “Self-appraisal” …

A little boy went into a drug store, reached for a soda carton and pulled it over to the telephone. He climbed onto the carton so that he could reach the buttons on the phone and proceeded to punch in seven digits (phone numbers).

The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation:

Boy: “Lady, Can you give me the job of cutting your lawn?
Woman: (at the other end of the phone line): “I already have someone to cut my lawn.”
Boy: “Lady, I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now.”
Woman: I’m very satisfied with the person who is presently cutting my lawn.
Boy: (with more perseverance): “Lady, I’ll even sweep your curb and your sidewalk, so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm beach , Florida.”
Woman: No, thank you.

With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver. The store-owner, who was listening to all this, walked over to the boy.

Store Owner: “Son… I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job.”
Boy: “No thanks,
Store Owner: But you were really pleading for one.
Boy: No Sir, I was just checking my performance at the job I already have. I am the one who is working for that lady, I was talking to!”

You know what will happen to your career if you start undertaking your “Self Appraisal” like that little boy. No one in the world would dare to stop your sky rocketing growth in your career.

Think twice before you speak, Think thrice before you act

My friend Javed Iqbal has shared this funny story which helps us realize that we should collect all related information before making any committment to any person. The story reads like this:
“A new vacuum cleaner salesman knocked on the door on the first house of the street. A tall lady opens the door. Before she could speak, the enthusiastic salesman barged into the living room and opened a big black plastic bag and poured all the cow droppings onto the carpet. “Madam, if I could not clean this up with the use of this new powerful Vacuum cleaner in the next 10 mins, I will EAT all this dung!” Exclaimed the eager salesman. “Do you need chilly sauce or ketchup with that” asked the lady. The bewildered salesman asked, “Why, madam?? “There’s no electricity in the house…” said the lady.

If you love your job and your wife …

The great chinese scholar Confucius said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” True, happy is the man who loves his profession. When my students of MBA often ask me what area of specialization they should choose, literally I pity them. I tell them they should only adopt the area which matches thier temperament and thier aptitude. I feel very sorry when they say that most adds of newpaper offer job to such and such areas of education. What I tell them is that if they even get masters in Punjabi, nothing can stop them achieving success if they really love reading Punjabi. What I personally believe, if you love your job and you love your wife, a day will come when you would be a success story. zindagi-zinda-dili-ka-naam-ha

If the student is ready, the teacher will appear

Everything starts with some though, some intention. First you have some idea in the inner plane, then you attract physical energy to manifest that idea in the physical plane. You may not have clear idea where to go but keep on thinking on that. Then the universal energy, higher intelligence and your subconscious mind will help you find the way. You subconscious is so powerful that even it will start creating circumstance to pave the way where you should find your objectives. If you are ready to learn, to grow, to succeed, you will definitely be guided and helped. Remember, where there is will, there is way.

Everyone has a potential to be a creative thinker

The problem with most of the people is that they either do not know their potential or underestimate that. The most valuable asset of man is their mind and heart - the source of creativity, inspiration, motivation, passion and everything that is require to make a man an extraordinary person. But we never tend to get most out of it. Yesterday an old student of mine met me who has done MPA and said he could not find anything worthy in himself which could help him succeed in life. I told him that he possessed all that which even worlds most successful person had and they used their potential  also. You have everything within you, the genius is inside, but you are not taking the first step. The first step is to start thinking, meditating and intriguing and trying to create something new, something extraordinary and something special which has not been done before. This is the secret of getting a valuable place in the world.

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

If you are facing violent opposition from people for nothing and you find no reason for thier efforts to put you down. You should then learn that it is only that you have some talent, some extraordinary qualities, some leadership skills which distinguish your personality from others, which help you not to be a part of the crowd and which can help you outcompete your friends, fellows, colleagues, peers and even your seniors. No one feels jealousy for a common and ordinary person. What you just need to do is not to disheart yourself, nor get angry, forgive them and focus on your big dreams.

Overpower yourself first, then overpower the world

He who cannot conquer himself, how come he can win the world. Every worthwhile achievement has a price tag on it. One has to pay the price to accomplish the success. And the price of success is always in form of hard work, consistency, persistence, determination and courage. All these qualities of man require him to overcome his own negativity, laziness,  sluggishness, procrastination and ill-will. One has to overpower his own “Nafas” to acquire all those extraordinary human qualities which pave the way for a greater success.
